At one point he compared how he was feeling to being ‘just like on a Hawaiian holiday’ before Sergeant McCarthy asked him what he meant. ‘I don’t know myself, no,’ Bryant responded, sounding confused. He also was at pains to prove that he was apparently a man of significant means, saying he once missed out on buying a $95,000 helicopter advertised in the local newspaper. ‘You can buy a helicopter. I’ve got the money, don’t you understand, I’ve got the money,’ Bryant said, his voice rising angrily.

For his inspirational work after the massacre,Walter was named by the Australian National Trust in 2000 as one of Australia’s ‘Living National Treasures’. He is in fine company, sitting alongside the likes of former Olympic champion Dawn Fraser and High Court judge Justice Michael Kirby. Today, however, Walter has consciously stepped away from the spotlight as he builds a new life separate to that shrouded by the massacre. In researching this book, it became clear to me that Walter rarely, if ever, returned to the Tasman Peninsula or kept in touch with many of his friends from the area.

After the crowd had filed out of the building, Keith hung back and talked to the woman counsellor who had hosted the session. ‘I thanked her. The next day, he collated the hurried notes into a readable package and stored them in a drawer, knowing they were there if ever he needed to take stock of his feelings and to be reassured that he ‘wasn’t going around the bend’. Just eight days later, these simple notes were to provide an anchor that Keith believes was given to him by his God in preparation for the devastating loss he was to suffer.
