However, there has been a small number of careful research studies into the prevalence of allergy (the number of people in the population suffering from allergy problems at any one time). These studies have been carried out across a number of years, and have shown fairly conclusively that allergies are indeed becoming more common.

Llergies occur because of a mixture of inherited and environmental factors. You were born with a predisposition to having allergies, which you inherited from your parents. This is called atopy, and is discussed in more detail in the section ‘Allergy explained’ at A 22 | A LLE R GI E S: AN SW E RS AT YO U R FIN G E R TIPS the beginning of this chapter. Exactly which genes we inherit from our parents is largely a matter of chance, so you may have inherited more ‘allergy genes’ than your sister. ) Given that you have this genetically determined tendency to develop allergies, environmental factors become important.

What caused my asthma? hen we think about the causes of asthma, we need to think about two things: what made you develop asthma in the first place and, once asthma is established, what factors can set it off.
