Example text

For her, ethical action was defined by the actions that supported the less powerful in society. She wrote the following: Much of my work over the last 20 years has been guided by the question of how to make schooling a better experience for children of color and from low-income backgrounds, or both. It has become increasingly clear to me that, whenever faced with conflicting questions of purpose and affiliation, I regard my main clients as children in schools, rather than as teachers (or administrators or pre-service students).

It is toward this enactment of ethical research that I now turn. TLFeBOOK 2. VULNERABILITY AND ETHICS IN RESEARCH 23 BEING ETHICAL Social science researchers have used various methods to protect vulnerable research participants. The BR (NCPHS, 1978) and subsequent IRB protocols suggested methods of protecting those preexisting vulnerabilities previously discussed. Researchers, however, have had less guidance when dealing with the vulnerability created within research projects. I first discuss the ways researchers have designed, implemented, and represented studies with preexisting vulnerable populations.

Each of these three cases creates vulnerability when an individual is disrespected by the act of manipulation. The BR (NCPHS, 1978) recognized that diminished autonomy can be a permanent or temporary state of affairs. For instance, autonomy may diminish permanently for an individual with a mental disability. In contrast, autonomy can diminish during a temporary period for another individual with a physical illness, but autonomy can return with the individual’s improved health. Circumstances such as incarceration can determine the more or less permanently diminished autonomy of people.
